Just keep playing a gamemode that suits you the best. I also complete challenges by accident lol but it helps.

Here are some things that you can do that will really boost your EXP gain for both Gun and Level Experience Points:
1. Complete Challenges!
If you have a favorite gun, don't just continuously grind with the red dot, maybe put the silencer on the thing. The amount of EXP you get for completing different Weapon Proficiencies and Attachments is phenomenal. Not to mention you might find your favorite attachment using this.
2. Play Kill Confirmed.
Not only do you get 100 points of experience for killing them, you get 50+ experience every single time your team-mate or yourself capture a dog-tag in which you either helped to get or killed the player to get. It's really a blast playing it too because it's so much fun (:
3. Perks.
Now these are a bit tricky, because you have to do some work for these. However, they are well worth it due to the fact that the EXP gain is consistent, rather than at random times with Gun Challenges. Like with the Scavenger Perk. I remember when i got around 750 resupplies with it, the game gave me about 10,000 experience! This occurs with almost all of the other perks, except i think that Scavenger was the easiest to complete because all you had to do was run over some dead bodies.
There are many more, but i just can't think of them right now ):
Be intuitive! Think about it a bit more instead of just going around killing people. There's a lot of things you can do.
Game modes that i would reccomend you play for maximum EXP Gain:
1. Search&Destroy
2.Team Defender
3.Kill Confirmed
Hope this helped (:

trust what some of these people say, switching up your guns makes a huge difference,i was switching between about 5 weapons every prestige, but after a while i only stuck to the ACR, that prestige took forever, many hours longer than usual. i think its 10,000 points for 300 kills, then another 10,000 for 500, ect. i would pick 5 or 6 guns to max out their proficiency and in the meanwhile i would get my 500 kills with them.keep looking at your challenges and do what your best at.for example i suck at knifing so i wouldn't even touch any knife challenges

yeah its almost better to get em by accident because sometimes you try to hard to get a stupid challenge and end up getting tunnel vision on the one challenge

You could sign up for Call of Duty: ELITE, then you would have 2 hours of free double XP.

I hate to say it but i play some hardcore Dom and throw a noobtube on a rifle. Also use UAV and Ballistic vests only. helps you by only letting you use gun kills.
